The distribution system of an engine involves several mechanical parts in addition to the two fundamental components which are the timing belt or chain, such as bearings and return pulleys,
tensioners and
self-tensioners to adjust the correct tension of the belt or chain, and not least the water pump in systems in which it is driven by the toothed belt.
